How it works

Control the products and messages your customers see through customized “recipes” — all controlled within your Shopify theme and our Context app.
Context recipes are made up of 3 ingredients
Content
The variations of content that you want displayed to your different customers.
+
Rules
The rules you set to trigger the different variations.
+
Analytics
The analytics that highlight how your recipe is performing.

Add sections to your Shopify theme

Context sections offer you the ability to create multiple variations of your content, within the same section. Once you’ve installed Context, additional section types instantly become available in the sidebar of your theme builder.

Create variations of your content

Add variations within each new Context section that you have added. These variations will change based on the rules that you will set. Using Context sections, variations can be different products, images, messages, or even styles!

Whip up a recipe

A recipe is a relationship between the variations created within each Context section, and the rules that trigger the content to be displayed to your customers. This is where the power of Context lies. A single recipe can display selected variations throughout multiple sections at the same time. Combining and applying rules to the recipe ensure you trigger the right content to the right customers at the right time.
CASE STUDY

Different location. Different weather. Different boots. Same store.

A marketing team is supporting their company’s goal to increase U.S. revenue of their winter boots category. However, promoting the same boots to everyone in the U.S., regardless of location, isn’t a great strategy.

They decide to divide their customers into 3 groups:

1. Wool-lined winter boots will be promoted to customers in Denver during their coldest months (January, February, and March).
2. Customers in Seattle will see rain boots, but only when they have rain in their forecast.
3. All other markets across the United States default to a promotional sale for all types of winter boots.

In their Shopify theme, the team uses the "Image with text" Context section to create the variations for each group.
  • Market one: All customers
  • market two: denver
  • market three: Seattle
When adding a CTA to a Context section, the first one applied becomes the default promotion. Strategically, the first promotion acts like a standard block on your website. You don’t need to apply any rules for this to be displayed. Only when rules are matched in your recipes will this version be replaced by another variation.
Recipe:
1. A generic winter boots promotion block was created using the “Image with text” section.
This message and content displayed to visitors in Denver, is based on geographic location and date range rules.
How is this achieved
1. A wool-lined boots promotion block was created using the same “Image with text” section as the default variation
2. The promotion was applied to a recipe called “Denver winter boot promotion”.
3. The geographic location (Denver, USA) rule was applied to the recipe.
4. The date range rule (January 01, 2022 - March 31, 2022) was applied to the recipe.
This message and content is displayed to visitors in Seattle, based on geographic location, local weather forecast, and date range rules.
How is this achieved
1. A rain boots promotion block was created using the same “Image with text” section as the default variation.
2. The promotion was applied to a recipe called “Seattle rain boot promotion”.
3. The geographic location (Seattle, USA) rule was applied to the recipe.
4. The weather rule (when rain is forecast in the next 7 days) was applied to the recipe.
5. The date range rule (January 01, 2022 - March 31, 2022) was applied to the recipe.
